To dye or not to dye wool fleece for needle felt?

En donde yo vivo no se encuentra gran variedad de colores de vellón, entonces necesito teñirlos!
Las tinturas que se venden son para teñido en frio o en caliente, pero la realidad es que la lana no toma el color si realizamos el teñido con agua fria, y si lo hacemos con agua caliente según indica las instrucciones: hirviendola varios minutos en una caserola con agua la lana se apelmasa y no resulta muy practica para luego feltearla.
Where I live there are not much variety of fleece colors, so I have to dye them. Dyes instructions says that you can dye wool with cold or hot water, but the true is that fleece dosen’t work with cold water, and if you boild them in hot water its felt and results are not good for felting.

1) Yo he desarrollado este método que no es el ideal pero con el que menos feltea la lana y con el cual logro un color bastante intenso:
Tiño de a pocas cantidades; primero coloco 2 cuchara de té de sal gruesa en el frasco, luego lleno de agua previamente hervida, a seguir coloca la cantidad de tintura y la disuelvo bien con un palito de brochet.
Por ultimo mojo completamente el vellón (y lo escurro totalmente) antes de introducirlo en el frasco.
La clave está en no moverlo demasiado en el frasco para que no se feltee aunque lo suficiente para que la tintura tome parejo, esto es solamente un par de veces con el palito de brochet. Dejarlo hasta que el agua se enfrie y hasta que consideremos que el color es el esperado.
1) I have develop this method, that is not perfect but is the less worse to avoid wool of felting, and the colors are not soo bad.
I Dye in small quantities; first I put inside the glass 2 spoon of salt, then I fill with boiled water, after I put the dye product and dissolved it with a wooden skewer. For last I wet & drain completly the fleece, and then I put into the glass.
The clue is not to move much the fleece to avoid felting, but move it about two times with the skewer to the color get solid. Leave it after water gets cold and after you consider the color is ok.

2) Yo utilizó estas tinturas, les hago un pequeño agujero en el borde con la punta de la tijera y luego de usarlas les cierro la abertura con un pedazo de cinta papel ya que tiño en pocas cantidades y hay producta para varios baños más.
2) I use this dyes, I make a small hole on top with the scissors, I use a quantity and after that I close them with tape, because I dye in small quantities and there is more product for other baths.

3) El resultado final son estos colores bastantes buenos, y estos vellones bastante apelmasados tambien!!
pero bueno…en Argentina no hay tantas opciones como en otros lugares y lo más importante es que el vellón sirve perfectamente para feltearlo con aguja, osea para felteado en seco y para los muñequitos que hago es un material más que suficiente.
3) This is what I got, really good colors and an excelent felted fleece !!!! mmm…..in Argentine there are not much options like in other places and the most important is that this materials is perfect and enough for the kind of miniatures that make.

4) Con un cepillo de perro yo trabajo el vellon teñido a mano antes de feltearlo con aguja.

5) Aca podemos comparar los teñidos a mano de los vellones superiores que son comprados listos y teñidos industrialmente.
5) Here we can compare this hand dye fleece from the top ones that I buy ready and there are industrial dyed.

6) Los colores son muchos más intensos y las texturas más suaves. Conclusión: si hay posibilidad es mejor comprarlas listas, durante el proximo invierno va a haber más colores por que el felteado en Argentina se está empezando a conocer! buenisimo!!!!!!!!!!!!
